Perspective articles in the Journal of Human Immunity are articles that provide a more opinionated expert analysis than review articles and which tend to focus on narrower topics. While it is important to convey an opinion, this should be done in a considered and balanced manner. Perspective articles should discuss the most recent scientific developments or conceptual advances in a field, seeing these in context and providing sufficient background information to make the topic accessible to a non-specialist reader.
Like review articles, all Perspective articles undergo internal editorial review as well as external peer review.
PERSEPECTIVE TEXT
Word limit
The main text of the Perspective should be 2,500-3,000 words maximum.
Please provide a concise title for your Perspective that summarizes the content and captures the interest of both experts and non-experts. We encourage you to keep the title within 60 characters (including spaces).
The title page should also include:
•The full author list.
•The complete names of the institutions for each author.
•The name, mailing address, telephone number, and email address of the author to whom correspondence and proofs are to be sent.
•The total number of words in the manuscript. The word count includes ALL sections of the main text EXCEPT the References and Figure Legends.
The abstract should concisely describe what the Perspective is about, highlighting why the Perspective is timely and summarizing the key points. It should be accessible to a non-specialist reader. Abstracts must not exceed 100 words and should not include references.
The purpose of the introductory paragraphs is to ‘set the scene’ for the Perspective, providing background information to the topic. The initial paragraphs should clearly explain the rationale for the Perspective (why is it timely now?), and should provide information to the reader on the flow of the article and the key topics that will be covered.
The main body text can be subdivided with headings (in BOLD CAPITALS) and subheadings (in Bold sentence case). We recommend that you subdivide the text in this way to provide a framework that orientates and guides the reader through the Perspective.
It is good practice to conclude the main text with a paragraph that summarizes the key points of the article, including comments on the latest developments that have been highlighted in the article, and which looks to the future.
Terms that do not appear in the JHI standard abbreviations list must be used three or more times in a manuscript to justify abbreviation. When using nonstandard abbreviations, the full term should be spelled out at the first mention, followed by the abbreviation in parentheses. The abbreviation should be used consistently thereafter. All nonstandard abbreviations should be listed in alphabetical order on the title page.
The number of references for JHI Perspective articles is unlimited.
All in-text citations and references must be formatted according to the Reference guidelines. In- text citations should be Harvard style and listed alphabetically by the first author's last name in the Reference section.
References should be cited in parentheses in the main text by author and year of publication
e.g. (Jones et al., 1999), (Jones and Wilson, 2009), (Jones, 2009)
When a person(s) who is not an author of the article is the source of unpublished data, those data must be cited as a "personal communication and authors must provide an email or signed le[er of permission from the source of the communication authorizing the authors to cite the communication. Personal communications may not be cited in the Reference list.
Perspective articles may be supported by 2-3 figures, boxes, or tables maximum. Each figure requires a numbered figure legend with a concise title followed by figure legend text describing the figure, up to a maximum of 150 words. We would be happy to accommodate any requirements for figures in Perspective articles. Additionally, we are willing to assist authors with figures.
JHI is now encouraging Perspective authors to create figures for their JHI articles using BioRender at no cost to them. Figures created this way will feature the JHI logo and automatically follow the JHI formating guidelines. Please log in using the following portal: h[ps://app.biorender.com/user/signin/rup. If you have already created your figures in
BioRender, once logged in, you will be able to tag them with your manuscript number 2023XXXX. Once you do so, they will be watermarked and BioRender will check that they meet JHI's formating requirements.
Text boxes can be used to provide additional detail on a technical point or concept which would otherwise detract from the flow of the main text. Boxes should have a maximum of 250 words, and they can include a figure (which does not require a figure legend).
Any display items that have been previously published will require copyright permission. For these figures, please let us know the full journal citation of the original publication, the original figure number and the original page number. Please also specify whether the figure is being reproduced or modified. It is important that you supply this information at first draft stage, because obtaining copyright permission can be a 'me-consuming process. Legends for figures that have been reproduced previously should cite the original reference as follows: Reproduced/modified with permission from Reference XXX. The original reference should also be cited in the reference list.

All authors must disclose any commercial affiliations or consultancies, stock or equity interests, or patent-licensing arrangements that could be considered a conflict of interest regarding the submitted manuscript.
All authors must complete a disclosure form before acceptance. A link to complete the form online will be sent to all authors when the manuscript is provisionally accepted. View our disclosure form for more details.
Please submit your Perspective as an editable Word document.
Authors should provide a cover letter that includes the name, address, and contact information for the corresponding author (phone number and email address). Authors may include in their cover letter suggestions for suitable reviewers and requests for people to be excluded from the reviewing process, along with an explanation for the exclusion(s). We take requests for exclusions seriously and honor these requests whenever possible.
The JHI editors may provide feedback on the first draft of your article, focusing on the structure of the article, the flow of the text and accessibility of the content. The idea is to work with the authors to ensure that the Perspective is in the best possible shape prior to peer review.
All Perspective articles at JHI undergo peer review, typically by two external reviewers. Although it is possible that articles may be rejected based on referee comments, this is rare. More usually, referees support publication with some revisions: in this case we will send you the referee comments together with final editorial suggestions and ask you to submit a revised version for publication.
Copy-editing: When a Perspective article has gone through internal and external review and the revised article has been accepted for publication, it will then undergo copy-editing prior to publication. The in-house team will liaise with authors regarding sign-off of the final copy-edited version for publication.
License to publish: A license to publish must be signed by the primary corresponding author prior to acceptance. View our license to publish agreement for more details.
Proofs: Corresponding author will be emailed a link to proofs within two weeks after acceptance. Authors may choose to edit either the HTML or PDF versions of their proofs. Proofs must be returned within 48 hours.
